Little Miss C is one HUGE fan of Peppa Pig, and more so of her little brother, George. So naturally, when I asked her what cake would she like for her birthday this year, she answered me loud and clear, “PEPPA PIG!”
Right…gotcha little missy.
Turns out, she celebrated her birthday 3 times this year as she turned 3. Not only will she be celebrating it in pre-school for the first time, she’ll also got to celebrate it separately with her grandparents on both sides.
Celebration #1: Buffet Dinner at Element – Amara Singapore
Hubby’s friend who is a chef at Amara Singapore kindly helped us organise this early birthday celebration.
Apart from enjoying the delicious buffet spread in the restaurant, we also got to sample some tapas selection from the restaurant’s bar menu – some of which were his creations.
For the cake, we chose to opt for a cream-based one as opposed to a fondant cake. From her past birthdays, we’ve found that while the latter may look nicer (it is probably easier to design and shape the fondant), it is also a 100 times sweeter. We didn’t want the birthday girl going on a sugar high right after dinner, or she’ll take forever to go to bed later that night.
This was a red velvet cake with cream cheese, covered with fresh cream and a Peppa Pig fondant piece which hubby ordered from Niche. Apparently, they have a good cake selection that are absolutely divine – and this cake didn’t fail to disappoint either. Needless to say, we managed to wipe almost the whole cake off despite being rather full from dinner.
Celebration #2: At MY World PreSchool
With the number of kids in her N1 class constantly growing, the little missy got to celebrate almost all of her friends’ birthdays before she had her turn.
As we observed the trend of how birthdays are celebrated in pre-schools here – cake and party bags/gifts – I made a note to prepare the items about a month before.
We wanted to give her birthday celebration a special touch, so she’ll have something to look back fondly on this day. After looking up online, I saw that a lot of kiddy birthday parties featured a piñata filled with goodies, and so a bright idea came to mind.
We also prepared goodie bags for the kids (filled with Peppa stickers, erasers and a pencil each – and sealed with personalised stickers from Stickerlicious), and Daddy and Grandpa blew a total of 32 Peppa hand baloons! Items were bought from Taobao and from Kaison during one of our road trips to Malaysia.
There were 32 kids in her class at that time, and we were scratching our head on what size the cake should be. We wanted something that is easy to cut and distribute to the little ones, and the regular cake didn’t seem to fit into that category. I tried to imagine the teachers cutting up at least 32 pieces of cake on the day itself!
Then I thought of mini cupcakes! Not only did it come in a kid-friendly size, there was plenty that the baker could do when it comes to the design. After searching high and low for a baker who could do a nice Peppa Pig themed mini cupcakes, I settled with Cake Story, a home baker based in Toa Payoh who has done lots of themes and designs for kids, including Peppa Pig.
Wished the baker had told me earlier that the Peppa Pig designs were actually toy rings for the kids, so that I could tell C’s class teacher beforehand. We only found out when we saw some kids trying to bite on the rings and the teachers quickly removing it from their hands and washing it up before handing back to them.
But as a whole, the little missy had a blast being the centre of attention (at last!) among her friends:
Celebration #3: Birthday treat from Mum and Dad
We decided to take the day off work on her actual birthday, and to give her a day off from school (while we still can!). Brought her to the toy store and told her that she could choose 1 item as her birthday present, but that item must have Mum and Dad’s seal of approval first.
It didn’t take long for her to decide what she wanted…
Yes, she got her first set of wheels! We were toying with the idea of getting her her first bicycle, and have brought her to try out at the toy store several times. On all occasions, she simple loved being on the bike and would protest when we told her time’s up. Well…she finally got her wish. My dad trained her to pedal the bicycle (instead of using her legs to move around, like what she’s used to with her scooter), and it didn’t take long before she got the hang of it.
She then spent the whole afternoon cycling around the house, and refused to take her afternoon nap! As a result, she almost knocked out right after dinner – but her eyes lit up again after cutting her birthday cake and ripping open her presents!
My Dear Girl…
We hope that your 3rd birthday will make the cut into your collection of favourite memories while growing up, as you were showered with so much love from everyone in your life: Mummy and Dada, Grandma and Granny & Grandpa, Aunty Rona – our family helper, and Teacher Nabillah – your favourite teacher who dotes on you and bought SOOO many presents for you.
Do continue being that inquisitive and adorable little girl that you are, and don’t ever stop being curious about everything around you…as we believe that’s exactly how you’ll learn and pick things up.
Here’s to yet another amazing year as you grow past the terrible twos stage!
